Mild Sedation: What You Need to Know

Visiting a sedation dentist can be a frightening experience for a child and their parents. However, a lot of this fear can be eased when you’re armed with knowledge of what’s about to happen. At Storybook Dental, our professional staff are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

What Is Mild Sedation?

Mild sedation, also known as conscious sedation, describes a condition where your child will be awake, but relaxed to the point that they can receive treatment without feeling distressed. Mild sedation is usually administered as a pill, a drink, or a gas.

Children with special needs, and very young children, respond well to mild sedation. In some cases, they may take a pill an hour before their appointment as well as receiving nitrous oxide (laughing gas) while we perform the procedure.

The use of mild sedation is to calm children’s anxiety while keeping their airways open and wears off quickly once treatment has finished. There are no long-term side effects and recovery happens quickly and easily.

What Our Pediatric Dentist Would Like You to Know

Mild sedation is given to your child carefully and the size of the dose is determined by your child’s weight. You are able to stay with your child while sedation is being administered and our clinical staff will monitor your child throughout the procedure.

Your child may fall asleep while under mild sedation, but they will be easy to wake up as they will not be deeply sedated. They may also seem drowsy for a few hours after treatment, but this is normal and will not last long. Dr. Hsu and his staff will talk to you about any concerns you may have.

What You Need to Do Before Mild Sedation

Before mild sedation is given to your child, we ask that they do not have any clear liquids for at least 3 hours before their appointment. Non-clear liquids, or breast milk, shouldn’t be given for 4 hours and formula milk for 6 hours before. Also, no solid food must be taken for 8 hours before the procedure.

The goal of every sedation dentist is to provide high-quality dental care to your child with as little distress as possible for the both the child and their parents. At Storybook Dental, we take pride in the feedback we receive from patients who say their visit to our practice was a pleasant experience.
