The Tale of the Toothache: When to Call the Dentist

At Storybook Dental, we know a sudden toothache can feel like the beginning of a very un-fairytale adventure. But don’t worry—we’re here to help guide your family through the twists and turns of dental pain and trauma with clarity, compassion, and a bit of magic.

Here’s how to know when it’s time to grab your phone and call the dentist.

Chapter 1: The Sneaky Start of a Toothache

Tooth pain in children can start quietly—maybe a bit of sensitivity here, a sore bite there. But like any good story, things can escalate quickly.

Common early signs include:

  • Complaints of “something sharp” or “weird” in the mouth
  • Pain when chewing or brushing
  • Swelling around a tooth or gum
  • Avoiding certain foods

If your child starts showing any of these signs, it’s a good idea to call and schedule an exam before the pain turns into a full-blown tooth villain.

Chapter 2: When It’s Time to Call ASAP

Some dental issues are more urgent than others. Pick up the phone immediately if your child experiences:

  • Persistent or severe tooth pain that doesn’t go away with over-the-counter medication
  • Swelling in the face or jaw—this could indicate a serious infection
  • Knocked-out or chipped tooth (especially permanent teeth)
  • Bleeding that won’t stop after a mouth injury
  • Pus or a “pimple” on the gums—a sign of an abscess
  • Tooth discoloration after trauma (gray or black tooth)

Even baby teeth matter—ignoring pain can lead to more serious issues and impact how adult teeth develop.

Chapter 3: What to Do in a Dental Emergency

For a knocked-out permanent tooth:

  1. Gently rinse the tooth (don’t scrub), place it in milk or saliva, and come to our office immediately. Time is critical!
  2. For a chipped or broken tooth:
  3. Collect any pieces, have your child rinse with warm water, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

For a sudden toothache:

Try brushing and flossing to remove any food debris, offer a cold compress, and give age-appropriate pain relief. Then—call us for an appointment!

Chapter 4: Prevention Is the Best Spell

Here’s how to protect your child from dental emergencies:

  • Keep up with regular cleanings and checkups
  • Use mouthguards during sports
  • Avoid chewing hard candy, ice, or non-food items
  • Brush and floss daily like a hero on a quest!
